As the fourth case study in the transportation asset management plans series, this study identifies good practices around risk management adopted by ten different state DOTs. Washington State (WSDOT), California, Kansas, South Dakota, Louisiana, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado, and Michigan all display insightful practices related to risk management. From WSDOT's incorporation of risk management into nearly every element of their TAMP to Caltrans' partnerships with other agencies to reduce risk, this set of case studies takes a deep dive into standout practices that all state agencies could consider adopting.

Following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, researchers studied the hurricanes' impacts on supply chains. This article explores the key lessons learned from each affected area and how to mitigate risk in the future.

The objectives of this research are to document (1) the state of practice within state DOTs as they implement these new requirements and (2) the impacts of implementation to date on asset condition, safety performance and the investment of federal transit funds. This research will provide states with information that will help them evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts to date and refine or adjust their implementation.

2020 saw the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and a social movement highlighting racial injustice. As individuals and agencies dealt with the many challenges and adjustments of this time, many of the issues central to transportation also changed. This addendum to the Critical Issues in Transportation 2019 explores the short- and long-term impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on transportation in each of the areas defined in the original report.

The dashboard presents 15 performance measures in the areas of Inclusion, Practical Solutions, and Workforce Development. All of the performance measures support the WSDOT strategic plan. For each performance measure, the dashboard contains information on how successful WSDOT was in achieving their established goal, how it is measured, some background information, and visualizations of their progress over time. The WSDOT dashboard is also notable for its incorporation of diversity, equity, and inclusion metrics as well as workforce development goals.

The VDOT performance dashboard presents with a quick glance the status of five key performance indicators: road clearance times (operations), structure & pavement condition, annual highway deaths (safety), on-time project delivery (projects), and finance. By navigating through the site, users can uncover more details about each of these KPIs including historic trends, maps, per-district breakdowns, downloadable data, and much more.

The Michigan DOT Transportation Asset Management Council (TAMC) Dashboard features performance metrics in the categories of bridge, pavement, culverts, traffic, safety, maintenance, and finance. For each area, they display a set of graphs indicating the relevant data (such as condition, trends, forecasts, and breakdown by geographic area).

The Missouri DOT performance tracking dashboard contains plentiful information on their selected measures divided into three areas: safety, service, and stability. The tracker is updated each quarter and has data going back to 2005. The dashboard provides a wealth of information on numerous metrics in each category including clean visualizations, a write up of the measure, its purpose, and how data is collected.

Idaho Transportation Department presents 11 selected performance measures to provide insight into the condition of the public assets. Their measures are:

On the dashboard homepage, users can easily see the current progress ITD has made on their selected performance measures. After clicking on any of the measures, they can view more information on the measure (including how and why it is measured) and trends over time.
